SOUTH CANYON TRAILS
GLENWOOD SPRINGS, CO
2016 - 2018
During Phase 1 development of the South Canyon Trails Plan, Singletrack Trails was brought in to consult on the overall desire of the mountain bike community to assist the City of Glenwood Springs in the cost-effective development of a diverse, shared-use trail system on City managed lands within South Canyon.
From our extensive experience building trails in challenging environments, we were able to identify and provide solutions to barriers that would prevent cost-effective trail construction due to the canyon’s numerous rock outcroppings and other constraints on the property.
Phase 1 of South Canyon is just the beginning of well planned, diverse trail system within the greater Glenwood Springs area. By developing family-friendly shared-use trails, backcountry trails, and mountain bike-optimized trails, the network is optimized to reduce congestion and potential conflicts, while offering trail users the opportunity to maximize their experiences based on the recreation time available, group desires, and capabilities.
With an early understanding of the project constraints and difficulties in efficiently building trails within the rugged canyon terrain, all project partners we able to remain flexible to ensure the resulting product would be affordable to build, fun to use, and remain sustainable for generations to come.
With trail access just over 2 miles away from the west side of the City of Glenwood Springs, the South Canyon trails add a unique flavor of mountain bike optimized trails to the now 50+ miles of trail in the region.
